The NNSA Office of Radiological Security (ORS) is pleased to invite you to an upcoming cybersecurity training in Washington, DC  on August 06-07, 2024 at the Grand Hyatt Washington Hotel located at 1000 H Street NW, Washington, DC 20001.

ORS routinely holds new course pilots as part of a formal training development process and collaborates with partners for sneak peeks and feedback. We would be grateful for your participation to help ensure our content meets the needs of sites, such as yourselves.

This course will focus on cybersecurity issues associated with the physical protection systems that have been installed through your partnership with ORS for the protection of your high-activity radioactive sources.

The intended audience for this course is Site Security Officers, Radiation Safety Officers,or other staff that have responsibility for the security of radioactive sources.  Others could include IT or cybersecurity staff with responsibility for networks and systems used to protect the sources.  Security vendors or staff who installed or maintain your physical protection systems are also welcome.  The course isn’t designed for cybersecurity experts, but for staff that have responsibility for the security of radioactive sources whose knowledge of cybersecurity may vary.

Cyberattacks are an emerging threat vector for radioactive source security. Effective security of radioactive sources requires security, response, administrative, and management elements work together to have a successful security program that prevents the theft of radioactive sources. Increasingly, security systems are moving to Internet Protocol (IP)-based components which means that cybersecurity should be part of your physical security program.

This training will cover the following topics and will be focused on how these topics relate to your security systems installed in cooperation with ORS:

  • Cybersecurity Concepts, Terms, and Definitions
  • Cybersecurity Controls
  • Insider Threats
  • Encryption
  • Networking
  • Cybersecurity Tools
  • ORS Cybersecurity Best Practices
  • Ransomware
  • Remote Access
  • Procurement Language for Contracts
  • Securing the Supply Chain

We aim to have a maximum total of 20 attendees across a few local sites and welcome multiple participants from your organization on a first-come first-served basis, so please let us know at your earliest convenience and no later than July 24, 2024 if you are interested in joining us for this important training. Thank you for your valuable partnership and cooperation.
